Our Research Mission

Globalization has deeply transformed our society and schools. In Korea, the government now faces the daunting task of providing aid to developing countries with Korea’s transition from developing to developed country. As a result of globalization, large numbers of Korean students are going abroad for educational purposes, the number of international and foreign language schools is multiplying, and the discourses and reforms adopted by policy-makers abound with references to internationally successful cases, often in Western industrialized countries. A strong foundation and understanding of international and global contexts is thus critical today in the education field.

Our Comparative and International Education research group strives to develop innovative and creative ways to think about education to bring positive change. We believe that a narrowly-defined local vision of education cannot lead to insightful solutions to domestic problems. Furthermore, copying successful cases from other countries without an in-depth understanding of the context in which foreign educational reforms were implemented can lead to disaster. We seek to build a community of young minds actively pursuing topics in Comparative and International Education (CIE) to deepen our understanding of the global and local context in which we live, learn how to critically consume and interpret international data, and actively seek innovative blue ocean solutions to solving education problems.

세계화는 우리 사회와 학교에 심도 있는 변화를 불러일으켰다. 현재 대한민국은 저개발국에서 선진국으로 발전하여 원조를 제공하는 중책을 맡게 되었다. 또한 해외로 가장 많은 수의 학생들을 보내는 유학생 공급국가이며, PISA 등 국제학업성취도에 평가에 민감하게 반응한다. 뿐만 아니라, 다른 나라의 성공적인 교육정책을 빈번히 차용한다. 이와 같이 오늘날 우리 교육은 세계화의 맥락에서 이루어지고 있기 때문에 교육에 대한 국제비교적인 안목이 절대적으로 필요하다. 이러한 취지에서, 비교교육학은 글로벌과 로컬의 상호관계를 잘 이해하고 국제자료를 분석하고 해석할 수 있는 국제적 감각과 능력을 키워주는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 비교교육학은 궁극적으로 세계화 시대에 교육 분야의 새로운 패러다임을 제시하고자 하는 학문적 노력의 산실이다.
